Surgery
First
Thanks to the great advances in three-dimensional computed tomography and specialized surgical techniques, it is now possible to operate on patients who have not had orthodontic treatment before or any other preparatory treatment for orthogonatic surgery, this type of surgical approach allows the patient to be intervene first and then put the orthodontics in the post operative. While it is true that this type of surgical process brings great benefits to the patient, each case must be studied in depth to determine if you are a candidate for Surgery First.
General characteristics of patients eligible as candidates for accelerated orthognathic surgery:
-
Moderate alignment of teeth (acceptable crowding ranges and spaces)
-
Bite stability within acceptable ranges
-
Patients with prognathism turn out to be more favorable candidates than those with retrognathism
-
Dental angulation within normal ranges
Some unfavorable cases may be considered for the surgery-first approach. However, much more sophisticated treatment plan is required for best results.
